The institute year includes opening ceremonies, guest lectures, field trips and the closing presentations delivered during the concluding institute.

At the time the first institute was being planned, the roster of i3 events for 2011 had not yet been confirmed. One highlight from the early years was the 2012 opening ceremony, which welcomed a keynote address from Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
