Where do the professionals who protect and manage it come from?
From Information Schools (iSchools) -- universities and colleges that offer degree and research programs in the Information Sciences. These iSchools are producing the next generation of Information Professionals.
Think about it. Information is the lens through which we view – and the portal through which we also influence - the world. Institutions that make up our everyday lives — hospitals, banks, supermarkets, manufacturers, entertainment companies, governments, and corporations — employ Information Professionals.
What might surprise you is the type of work that Information Professionals do: they protect your credit card number or design a reading program for teenagers as well as that cool application for your Smart phone. If you’ve ever downloaded music, requested a book from the library or sent an e-card, you can thank Information Professionals for making it possible.
Overwhelmed by the volume of available
information, we just don’t have enough professionals to help us make
the best use of it. And, not enough of those professionals reflect the
face of society.
The iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3)
is a bold new project headquartered at the University of Pittsburgh
with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. i3 is a series of
summer institutes and projects designed to introduce undergraduate
students to the challenges and opportunities available within the Workday.
i3 aims to create the next generation of leaders to ensure that the
Information Sciences discipline and professions reflect the face of the
population. Our field needs the full spectrum of perspectives and
creativity to address society’s needs.
